All photographs for this project were taken with a Mamiya RZ67 on Fuji Superia Reala 100 negative film, scanned and enhanced using Photoshop 6.0 and Flash MX 2004. The final piece was designed specifically for web and CDROM and contains 22 photographs. Though significant loss of quality was anticipated, I have tried to strike a compromise occasionally resulting in file sizes unsuitable for slower modems.
'Llecyn' documents my grandparent's home whilst they made plans to leave after 30 years living there. My original aim was to preserve a sentiment filled, happy childhood place whilst suggesting my grandparents imminent move. The result seems, instead, undeniably melancholy - suggesting perhaps an interesting discourse between the appearance and nature of loss and preservation.
The following pages contain the work behind the main project as it progressed, alongside discarded ideas and Flash pieces. Apple Quicktime is required for some of the work.
Welsh translation accompanies the shorter pieces of English text throughout this project. My family are Welsh and though my grandparents have lived on the English side of the border all my lifetime, they spent the majority of their lives in the valleys of Wales and plan to return once their house is sold. When travelling to visit them I've always known that when the road signs begin to appear with Welsh translations, I'm getting close. The project title 'llecyn' translates as 'place' but refers to a specific spot, not a general area. If you split the word in two 'lle' translates as 'place' (in a general sense) and 'cyn' as 'past' (or more accurately as 'historical memory').
